Lethal Virus

As many of you have heard, there's a deadly strain of the Herpes 2 Virus that is spreading in the US and has made it in to Canada. My area is a little more remote as far as population goes so horses are spread out more but there are a few stables. Earlier this week I learned the virus may be in our area. A phone call to the vet's office confirmed one case. Advise was to wash hands, remove any clothing that a horse may have blown on, the usual precautions to prevent the spread of any virus. Today I informed a fellow with ponies of the virus, that one horse had been diagnosed with the fatal version. The fellow was adamant that it wasn't in the area, that he'd know, yet he'd not talked to any of our vets. When it comes to horse care I go to the source, our vets, not listen to boneheads like him.

Any clue how close this is to Montana?

Saddlebag 10-25-2011 07:33 PM

We're not close by any stretch to Montana but it's in Utah for sure as that's where it started at a big reining show. And of course people/horses came for many miles. It's gradually making it's way thro the states, at least the western states. That's where it came in to Canada but managed to come eastward. Just got a phone call so may have an update as the caller has emailed some info.

Are we talking about the EPV outbreak from this summer up at Golden Spike? God, you scared me- I thought we were discussing a new virus!

This happened in May in Utah at the reining there. It has pretty much made its way through most of the western states and quit showing up at this time. No new cases have been seen for months, shows have been reinstated and no more quarantines at barns and stables.
So, this sounds like a new outbreak in Canada.

Oh goodie =( Hopefully it doesn't come to Saskatchewan.

It's the same virus, just making it's way across Canada. We're hoping the very cold weather will break the cycle as no one attends shows then. Sorry for typo, herpes 1 virus, not 2. I hate this keyboard, cheap piece of junk that came with the new computer.

I just got notification that they have stopped the show and put all horses at the ApHC World Show in Ft. Worth under quarantine pending the results of tests for EHV. Evidently a horse (supposedly from Canada but I haven't been able to confirm that for sure) has come down with paralysis and other EHV symptoms. Still awaiting further info.
