What to charge for eye meds?

Unfortunately new boarder came in with a horse with eye issues. Lepto titer is being run. In the mean times - horse needs 2 ointments 3-4x per day. Oral banamine 1x per day.

Horse is a MAJOR PITA about anything to do with his nose. I managed to get eye meds in by myself this morning (I am a former vet tech) but he freaked about the banamine so I left it. My husband can help me in the evening.

But - what do we charge? I don't want to charge an arm and a leg but I can't do it for free. I did tell her she will have to bump to stall board so I don't have to track him down in the dark at 5 a.m.

I'd probably charge $10-15 bucks a day for it. We charge $5 per banamine/shot/worming/etc, then I would charge a per-dose rate on the eye ointment.

Figure out how much of your time its taking to dose the PITA and bill for it accordingly - you worked as a vet tech, bill your hourly pay rate accordingly. If this is going to be long term, you may want to charge a flat fee for treatments per week/month.

If nothing else, it may inspire the boarder to attempt to tackle some of their own medicating.

She is going to try and do the afternoon meds. But - she's rather a nervous nellie and the horse has her number.

I was thinking the $5 per dose but that seems like an awful lot. Yet $1 just doesn't seem to cover it.

Banamine is short term. Lepto titer will tell how long the eye meds go.

You mean you don't do it out of the goodness of your heart? ;o) (I'm soo joking..)
lol.

Eye ointments are a PITA in general. To administer the oral banamine(that they bought) I charge $1. I'd probably charge $1 for each ointment, each time. So if I had to give 3 ointments 3 times a day plus bute/banamine paste it would be $10 a day.

What about $15/day for both, $10 when only one will be required?

DuffyDuck 10-26-2011 10:12 AM

I agree, you're still providing a service to people.
I pay 1 a day for my horse to be put in the walker for an hour, 1 for a rug change etc.
I don't know how much it is in euros, but $10/15 seems an awful lot to me!

When it's 3 times/day with the horse who is not an easy handler I wouldn't call it too much. :) Probably with easy puff I'd suggest $5-7, not with handful horse though.

Thanks for the opinions. Vet is coming out this afternoon for a recheck. Hopefully the test results are back for the lepto. Those results will sway how we arrange his care.

I sure hope it doesn't have it.

I think $5 each time would be reasonable. I'd hope that she would get out there once a day to help you out so you are not doing it every time.

Well since you are spoofing I would go along with Starlinestables advice.
