nose bleeds
i have been trainging my friesen cross throughbred for about 45-60mins a day and twice now in the past 3months he has had two nose bleeds, of both days were hot, and they were both after he had worked,
i need to no why,
he has no history of the bleeders diesease in his breeding,
can they develop this?
or is it because its hot and he has worked hard?
help please has any one else come across this?

I've never seen a horse with a nose bleed. Has he possibly had an injury you didn't know about? I think I would call my vet and get an opinion.

I once saw a horse with a chronic nosebleed, and it turned out he had an ulcer in his nasal cavity that had to be "burned" to seal it. Not sure if the vet really burned the flesh or that was just the term the owner used. The ulcer started out with intermittent bleeding and progressed to a constant drip, that made the horse get anemic before they figured out how to treat it. Guess they'd thought it was a cancerous lesion as some point. But the horse turnded out just fine, by the way.

Of course, I'm not at all saying your horse has that issue! But would look into it vet-wise to make sure it's not something serious. Nip it in the bud when there's blood involved.

my mare has had 3 nose bleeds since august, and we have no clue what is causing them. they were all after i rode her pretty hard.

i asked my vet about nose bleeds and she said DEFINATELY get it scoped.

we are going to her rezzis scoped, but not right now. we can't afford it right now. her estimate for around here was $600! thats one months board!

Nose bleeds make me worry a lot. I would keep a schedule of what days your horse had a nose bleed and how long they last. An old lesson horse at my barn who passed away a year ago started having nose bleeds 4 months before he died. We took him to the vet becasue they became more frequent and we learned that he was anemic. His blood was all out of wack and we did everything to help him but he got and infection and couldn't stand any longer so we had to put him down. So nose bleeds scare me so bad! I hate them, definately keep an eye on that and if it gets worse ask your vet about supplements you could give him/her to help.
