WOW... Just wow...

I was floored to read this article on Yahoo about 20 minutes ago. I am perfectly willing to believe that we should never stop striving to treat the animals in our care better, with more respect and dignity and regard for their health and well being. This, however, I think is taking it just a bit too far.

PETA lawsuit seeks to expand animal rights

Basically, PETA is trying to get the 13th Amendment extended to cover animals, specifically, the 5 orcas that Sea World currently has in their possession.

I truly think dogs and cats should have constitutional rights too. In particularly NOT being sterilized (since we don't sterilize people).

I would like to see them stand in front of Tilikum and explain this. I've seen him in person and he's one massive animal.

I won't get into my hatred for PETA, but this is just another thing they stick their noses in and have no idea what they're talking about. Orcas have been my favorite animals for as long as I can remember and I do know a thing or two about them. You cannot just let them go into the wild after they've lived in captivity for so long or were born in captivity. They will die. They tried it with Keiko (the whale that played Free Willy) and eventually found him dead, the cause was determined to be pneumonia, but he was never accepted into wild pods and eventually the trainers were forced to continue caring for him. That was a whale that was captured from the wild, so imagine what would happen with a whale born in captivity.

I will be interested to see how this case turns out because like I just said, I love orcas and loathe PETA.

I really don't see too much of a difference between the Orcas and any other animal that is captive and does tricks for shows... Like horses even. Granted horses aren't caught in the wild and tamed and trained to do tricks AS OFTEN, but it does happen. People show off their horses tricks all the time. Horses are meant to run free and wild, yet many are kept in stalls at night (mine included.) As long as people are giving them the things they need (food, love, and exercise) and treating them nicely and keeping them healthy and vet checked, I'm not sure its necessary for a law suit. As far as I have ever seen or heard, the Seaworld trainers and employees love those whales no differently then I love my animals. Do people have a reason to believe these whales are being mistreated or malnourished?

Um... Really?? Sterilization of pets is responsible pet ownership and helps to prevent animals breeding uncontrollably. Many humans are "sterilized" though it is typically by their own choice. Men get vasectomies, women have their tubes tied or have hysterectomies.

Your lovely pet doggy or kitty does not have the higher function, decision making skills that would allow them to control their breeding choices. It is a stewardship issue that we ensure that populations do not grow beyond what we can sustain, and we are already failing at that given the huge populations of stray and starving animals in existence.

Oh, c'mon! Of course they do! When they want! Plus it's simply cruel to sterilize them. And against the nature. Much better to just let them live feral. Like those mustangs!

OT, but I don't think any person is sterilized against the wish. So far I've heard only one story (chinese woman who asked for refugee status in US because of that).

So are yoi trying to be sarcastic? Because your first post came off as thoigh you seriously believe animals should not be sterilized.

Stephie 10-26-2011 10:28 PM

Come on, guys!
I'm totally sure they make those 12,000lb Killer Whales to perform against their will!
The way they force them to swim around on command, and then all the dead fish they shove down their throats!

Oh, it looks like such torture...
(sarcasm, of course..)

...Really? I'm against animal abuse, but PETA takes things way too far, way too often.
