Bad knee, painful and locks in the winter. Help?
So 2 years ago yesterday my little mare I had then took a pretty bad fall with me on her, resulting in a cherished right knee. Long story short I burst both my nurses sacks, tore more then 65% of the muscles and ligaments in my thigh and surounding knee area.

I have been in physical therapy, massage therapy used braces (actually made it worse)

So in the winter more then normal with the cold weather it gets very painful!! It will lock up if sit for more then an hour and when I ri after the first 30 min it can go from dull ache to on fire pain.

I have been on and off pain killers but it doesn't help that I am allergic to vicoden and the only thing that takes the pain away is the extremely super strong pain pills that make me so drousy or loopy I feel like icant function at all!

What else can I do?! I need I ideas, anyone else have any horse related injuries like me?

Tom marrow I'll post a picture of how permanitly swollen my knee is. Ussaly right under the knee cap it is pretty firm, my injured one I can press down and it goes in and feels like jello like an inch and my knee cap moves around a lot! When sit for too long or when I use it to much, walking all day or bike riding it will click and pop with every step. It pops so loud when wemt to the dr last year she had me walk down the hall to see my gait and how I held it and one of the other doctors in another room I walked by came out and asked who was making so much noise, it was my joke not kidding here!

Any help would be great!

You lost me in the first paragraph. "Cherished right knee" and "nurses sacks"?

I had a very serious accident, non horse related, not quite 2 years ago. I couldn't walk for a long time, I too damaged a knee, including torn ACL, PCL and MCL, nerve damage, a bunch of other stuff. It can cause some problems with mobility.
What brace do you have? What exercises do you do with your leg? Have you tried methods like acupunture? Have you been to the specialist to see about surgery?

I love Recovery Extra Strength!
I take it twice a day and I can ride again after being off for the whole summer and in pain all last year. I was bucked off two weeks ago, and other than a bruised ego, no pain. I LOVE IT!!!!

I have the same deal.. but unlike you I just grit my teeth and deal with it. I should go to a doctor but no health insurance. But what helps is dropping my stirrups for awhile and gently and slowly flexing in the saddle. On the ground, I just try to keep moving as much as I can, starting up slow (warm up) and then just walking as I usually do. Keeps the swelling down for me at least. There is that heating/massage lotion you put on that relaxes and relieves sore muscles. I use it on my knee sometimes and it takes the edge off.

Hope you find something that works for you :/ I just deal with it despite the intense pain.
