Bits: How thick is TOO thick?
Hey guys, I'm looking at different french link bits because I'm trying to eliminate the "nutcracker" effect of a single jointed snaffle. I've been noticing though that many bits are much thicker than others. I've heard that thicker bits are supposed to be more mild but I'm not sure how thick is TOO thick.

I know all horse's mouths are shaped differently but any thoughts and opinions are always appreciated!! Thank you!

I'm not sure this can be directly answered... As you already said, horses are different.

I have a really thick loose ring oval mouth, that with a large pony I used it on, there was lots of mouth gaping. While another horse was very content and quiet in it... Different mouths, different preferences on the horses part.

They say thicker bits are milder, because would you rather have your thumb, or a thin wire pressing between your tongue and pallet? Wider range of pressure.

My gelding moves off really nicely in the french link dee made by Korsteel, on a side note.. He doesn't go for thick bits, and I haven't tried anything thinner on him. Best thing to do is borrow, and see what your horse is most content in and take it from there.

It totally depends on the depth of your horse's mouth. If the bit is too thick to allow your horse to fully close his mouth, you will have a really unhappy horse. Put it on and pull the lips up and see if it fits comfortably.

As others have said - it depends on the shape of the mouth/head. Some horses are totally comfy in a big, fat bit others won't be able to close their mouths comfortably and you'll get a lot of fussing with the bit and general grumpy chomping for your troubles. If you can, just experiment with different widths and get an idea of what your horse likes and what is too much. Generally, I don't go with bits that are a whole lot thicker than my thumbs.

Thanks guys! I went and lifted up her lips and her tongue is quite fat! I think im going to go with something on the slightly thinner side.
