Hoping someone can give me some guidance. A farmer down the road from me has some what he called "green feed bales" that he wants to donate to our resucue horses. He told me that they are oats, but cut and baled at the green stage, no head/seed formed. Is this a good option for the horses in conjunction with thier normal hay for the winter? Thanks for any advice.
Yes, they should be fine for your horses.
Since the hay is cut when the grain heads aren't yet ripe, it has similar protein content to grass hay. The only caveat is that it might be lower in calcium, so if that's a concern you should supplement.
