Nutrients for pony
So right now my aunt got a new pony starting at the beginning of may. and my aunt knows very little about about taking care of the coat, the hooves etc. And he has been grazing in a padock on grass, and only grass. Ever since he came to my aunts house. So he is really fat right now and he has thrush in all four of his hooves and can bearly walk from one side of the paddock to the other because he is in so much pain. But I know what to do for that, i'm focossed on his diet. What should my aunt give to help with him getting more neutrients in him, should she give him hay with grass? or just hay? or what? Any sugestions?
Alright, honstley, i am not a specialist at this so i do need some sugestions
This is going to sound harsh, but this is the truth.
Your aunt had no business getting a horse, or pony for that matter, without being properly educated on caring for one.
What should you do to help your aunt? Talk to your vet about what to feed. Your vet is you best bet. Also you or someone else needs to educate your aunt in properly caring for the horse.
Are you certain this pony only has thrush, not laminitis/founder? Being on thick spring grass and morbidly overweight... I would not be surprised if this pony has foundered.
She is in Canada it is late fall another month it is winter the grass is dying.
If I was your aunt I would have a vet or farrier out ASAP, and take it off grass and only hay no grain no treats.
You need professional help and soon for the pony because it sounds like founder.
I second people's advice to get a good equine vet out. NOW! If the horse can't walk on soft ground, chances are it's more than thrush that's wrong with it. Hopefully it's ignorance, not lack of caring that is why your aunt hasn't yet realised a lame horse needs a vet. Because IMO ignorance is easier to fix so there is hope.
Okay! thank you! my Aunt had the vet out yesterday. I haven't heard back from her yet. I think he's going to be fine :)
