Freeze brands

I have a freeze brand I use on my dogs. Can horses be freeze branded also? If so, can someone point me in the direction of a good article on how to do it on the horses? Or do they take it pretty well and I should just go to town?

Mustangs and Arabians are often freeze branded.

Horses and cattle take freeze branding quite well. You need to do it correctly and also have a brand registered in your state. Some people like to let the vet do it because they have the equipment to hold the horse still better. I've done it on nice gentle horses and they didn't move and the brands turned out nice. Spend the money and have a brand made out of cast brass by a company that specializes in brands. You have to hold the brand on the horse for (I think) about 15 seconds so it's impotant that you have an iron that stays cold.

15 second with liquid nitrogen or dry ice? I have done 45 seconds on dogs with dry ice but I've never used liquid nitrogen. I probably would use that this time so I don't have to hold it as long. I know a 50 pound dog is almost impossible to hold still so that's why I was wondering about a horse. I have a nice brand from L&H branding irons that should work.

I would use liquid nitrogen too. I don't know for sure how long you need to leave it on. You could check with the vet and see what he recommends.

Here is a pretty good video about how to do it on horses. There is a timeframe on proper application though. You leave it on colored horses for a certain amount of time to turn the hair white. On horses where a white brand wouldn't be visible (grays, pintos when the brand with be on a white pattern, some palominos or buckskins that are very pale, etc) they leave it on there for longer and completely kill the hair follicle so that no hair grows back at all and leaves only the darker skin underneath visible.

Standardbreds are freeze branded. They normally just set up a date, and someone from Standardbred Canada (I believe) does all the brands.

So, yes, they can be freeze branded.

Its alot safer and A LOT less painful to no pain than the old hot brand. A red hot metal brand on your skin.
