Weanling not eat Purina OmolEne #200
Is it unusual for my 4 month old to not eat Purina Omolene #200? The instructions give amounts to feed weanlings, but he won't touch it. He is eating grass hay and does not appear too thin. I would like to fatten him up a little more for the cold Utah winters.
It's not uncommon for weanlings who have never eaten grains to initially refuse them. If they eat with others, they learn quickly by following the others lead. You can sprinkle a small amount over the hay to get him started. Only offer him the smallest amount because once it sits out for a few hours, you should pitch it. I would rethink putting him on 200 when feeding grass hay. You want something with a better protein (lysine) source.
Agreed about the protein in such, but to get them to eat their grain, try sprinkling some molasses on it.
My horse is about 13 months old i was looking for a better feed so i started him on Purina 200 not a lot very small scoop mix with other feed.He getting hay 2 times a day.he is 13 -3 and 780 lb..should i wean him off and start him on Purina 300.
Omolene 200 is a 'performance horse' sweet feed. I wouldn't feed it to a weanling. I'd think twice before feeding it to a performance horse actually. I'd be looking at an appropriate ration balancer, and *if* he's not lacking condition, I'd be more inclined to leave off feeding extra calories unless/until he did start to lose a little, rather than pre-empting. I'd be sticking to low NSC, mid-range protein ingredients.
