Best saddle pad for jumping?
Hi, we have been jumping a lot more, and are moving up in height, and wanted to know if anyone uses any particular saddle pad to help cushion their horse's back when they jump? I saw a lot of different kinds in all of the catalogues and websites I drool over all day, but need to know if they are worth the money. I'm thinking specifically anything with gel or memory-type foam. Right now, we just use a regular pad and haven't had any problems, but if there's anyway they actually are effective, I'd jump at getting one. I don't need much of a push to buy more tack...enable me

I think one of the best pads are mattes pads. I LOVE THEM!
Mattes All Purpose Half Pad < Wither Back and Half Pads < Horse Tack|Dover Saddlery.
I hear these are really really good too. They absorber shock more than the mattes.
Ultra Thinline Sheepskin Half Pad < Wither Back and Half Pads < Horse Tack|Dover Saddlery.
All these look pretty nice but i would go for the ones with the sheepskin because they fit better, look nicer, and are more comfortable.
Dover Saddlery - Search Results for gel half pad

I hope this helps! :)

Thanks Bandera! How well does your mattes pad hold up to riding and washing?

Anyone else want to chime in?

I've started using these pads from Canada, called ecogold (for Dressage, not jumping but they make all kinds of pads including western) and when I ride without them I can really tell a huge difference in how my back is cushioned from the horses movement. I can imagine it is doing the same for the horse. I have the "secure" pads.
I also have a mattes and its been retired to the tack room in my basement.
I know some people like thinline as well, I've never tried them.

I love Mattes pads. They are wonderful and hold up extremely well. I've owned Mattes half pads for over 10 years and I've only gone through 2, my old one just didn't fit my new saddle properly and I sold it as there was phsycially nothing wrong with it. :) they are made extremely well, although pricey, and are really worth every penny. I use mine for everyday hacking and when I show in hunters too, so it serves kind of a double purpose haha.

Also I adore Back on Track products. They have sheets, wraps and now saddle pads. I just started using their saddle pads and notice such a difference with how Robbie moves, it seems like his back is so much more relaxed and open. Loveeee this pad. :)

Agreed that thinline is awesome too.
