Losing weight come winter time
My horse to seems to have lost some weight now that's it's coming winter time.
I just want to know that I am taking the right precautions and have him on the right stuff right now.
I don't have pictures of him recently since I haven't had my camera out with me lately. As of right now he's on....
1 scoop(3quart) of E-teq senior grain 8%
that's during day and night he gets 1/2 scoop
unlimited hay right now
1 scoop of cool calories (day and night)
1/2 teaspoon of yeast (probiotics) day and night
He just started on the probiotics and the cool calories today so I'm not looking for an improvement in the next couple of days but I also don't want him losing the weight so I want to do whatever I can do now. It's been getting in the lower 40s at night so I used to have his lightweight blanket on him but he ripped it so I am in the midst of getting it fixed.
Anything I should take him off of or put him on?
Sounds like you are doing great. Maybe add some rice bran to his diet? When Gidget got too skinny last winter I put her on alfalfa and rice bran as well as grass hay. She plumped right up!
I think they have rice bran in my feed store that I go to so I will definitely pick some up. I just remembered I also haven't worked with him so it might be lack of muscle that I am seeing too. Right now I just want to pay attention to his weight and not be worried about that. I also dewormed him on the 16th so that's definitely not it. I wormed him with Panacur
It also might be muscle loss due to it getting colder. I know my horses are a bit more on the flabby side O.O I don't like the rain season here...we sink in mud so I try and not ride too much so my horse won't hurt a leg or slip or me falling ..you know..lol
I don't know what it is but either way I really would like to take care of this. I know the vet is coming out this week so he'll be able to tell me a weight that he's at. I would say he's not lower than 1,000pnds
The cool calories and probiotics are a great idea! It made my Beau so fat he looks like an appendix!
Blanketing is also a good idea for a thin horse or one that tends to lose in the winter.
Sounds like you are doing everything right....:-)
I wouldn't worry too much. Sound slike you are doing everything perfectly. Just keep an eye on his weight and if you want(this isn't always correct but will help)weight tape him now and in two weeks or so weight tape him again and see if he has gone up from the previous time.
Blanketing helps. I blanket all mine.
Sounds like you're doing everything right. Give the cool calories and probiotics a chance to work. If you keep changing stuff, he'll never have a chance to adjust.
I am still getting his blanket fixed (he ripped it to shreds) and buying him a medium weight this week. It's supposed to be for christmas lol but he'll get it when I pick it up.
