I'm afraid I'll forget how to ride.
I won't be able to ride for a good while and I'm afraid I'll forget how to ride  does this happen? I'm afraid I will forget how to post, 2pt, sitting trot, lose my balance, etc... is there anything I can do to maybe not have this happen?
Riding is something you have for life. Sure you may forgot what diagonal or what lead to get on, but after a reminder from a friend or trainer it will come back to you! Getting a piece of paper and imagine riding will help, maybe a dressage test to help remember. Enter at a walk, heels down, deep seat, then trot, with the correct diagonal, heels down, no pulling reins, etc. Good luck and best wishes!
Its like riding a bike, you never totally forget it. Give it a few rides and you'll be back to normal.
^^ Agreed. Whenever I go a long time without riding, I get rusty, but within a few rides I'm back to normal.
What do you mean by "good while"? 20 years? I had a break in riding for over 10 years and could post again as long as I sat for the 1st time. Yeah, getting back all those muscles take time, but not the "memory".
Agree with Val, you won't forget but your muscles will for a while ;D
But it won't be forever and when you do you'll feel right at home
You never forget how to ride. I had horses as a kid, took a break, & didn't start riding again until I was in my mid 30's. It's amazing how fast everything comes back to you.
I've had over 6 months out of riding this year, due to work and time restraints, and not having a rideable horse. I rode my coaches 17.1hh 4 year old hanoverian with ENORMOUS paces a few weeks ago. The first 10-15 minutes I felt like I'd completely lost it, but then I got back into the swing of riding and had him working with no problems. In fact my coach was grinning and telling everyone that she 'created - this rider'
SO yes, you do pick it back up - though I couldn't walk properly for a few days after!!!
It comes back to you, no worries! I took 20 years off, and picked it back up just this past September. So three months later I am back to where I was, and learning a new discipline. Only thing I forgot (actually its my body that forgot) is sitting the trot. 20 years of aging has changed how much my body will relax and respond in the sitting trot...

Not 20 years haha more like 6 months. I will be hospitalized so I wont be able to do much exercise to keep my core muscles in shape. I'm bummed. Thanks for the replies everyone :-)
