Got to love those morning when someone is yelling your name, than tell you you'r horse is loose!
This morning Spice for some reason ducked under a taller piece of the fence (it was a little over 3 feet tall because of the land under it), I didn't think anything of the piece of fence because there is a tiny ledge than a deep ditch right there. Well she crossed the ditch, and ended up on someones lawn.
She must not have liked being out. Because she tore up two of my neighbors yards being scared of cars, builds and anything else. She must have going very fast to tear up the ground and get the spacing in the hoof holes. I went out opened the gate and let her back in, and was she was happy to be let back into her house. Now this morning, luckily all my neighbors are under standing, I called and apologized for the damage, and if the the dirt clods I already put back into the ground don't fill in I'll bring dirt and level them off.
Got to love these types of mornings! :-|
Horses are not the brightest creatures LOL. They work so hard to escape, and then as soon as they're out, they get scared and want to be back with their buddies and start running around.
...or else they just stand right beside the downed fence and start grazing.
Yup, I thought she would start grazing on the neighbors lawn because it still has thick green grass, but you can see she walked out of the ditch and galloped across the lawns (we share a drive way one on each side and me living at the top at the end). She must have scared herself silly.
My horses don't have to escape, my forgetful husband forgets to close gates behind himself after he plows snow. I work until 11pm, I drive up the road & think hmmmm, rather large deer, no, it's a PAINT!!!! Both horses are out, grazing on some sort of frozen weeds, I roll down the window, call & see if they will follow me home, nope, they blink, go back to eating. Why couldn't they just eat the hay at home in the breezeway of the barn? Great, it's -20F and I have to go catch horses, I am so mad. I go home & wake Mr. Forgetful up to drive me down the road so I don't have to walk there & back in the cold. At this point I don't care if he has to get up at 5AM. So I grab a bucket of grain, & we drive down there, I open the car window & hold out the bucket of grain, they come running, I tell hubby, back up & let them follow us. They did. All the way home into their paddocks. Good thing we live on a 2km long deserted road at the top of 2 hills.
I'm glad everyone's horses are fine!
Unfortunately it doesn't always end like that.
The local news reported just last week that 3 horses were out on the road and one got hit.
Yeah a family member had bought a horse a few years ago, about a week or two after the horses got out and only her's was hit. Snapped a few legs and massive internal damage, some how the horse continued to move off the road and down part of a long drive way, where he fell and the vet put him to sleep.
I've caught my fair share of loose horses (not mine a local stables), because the fencing is no good and the posts are rotten.
I am just glad Spice wanted back into her house more than she wanted to go across the road (I am not right on a road so she would have to travel a ways down the drive way).
There is a rarely any horses hit on the roads here, because most acreages are up gravel lonely roads like we live on. However, deer are hit left, right & center on the highways here. I heard that deer are responsible for the death of more people than any other animal in North America. Of course this was on Spike network "Manswers", so I don't know how accurate that is. Most everyone here has hit a deer at one time or another, I guess my turn is coming. Mr. Forgetful hit one while doing 120km on his motorcycle. Decapitated the deer, wrecked the bike, but he walked away with minor road rash.
