Reassurence to all tall riders out there!
I have recently begun fretting over the possibilty of outgrowing my lovley horse, although after huge amounts of research, and enquires into instructors points of view, and even ringing up my horses previous owners to ask if they think i am too big, I am now satisfied that i'm okay.
Well I am 15 years old, and theorioticaly I should stop growing, because the tallest woman in my family is 5ft10, while the rest are only around 5ft5 etc.
Anyway I am 5ft8, and 57kg (125.63lbs), and my horse is a fine built 15.3-16hh Thoroughbred. After research I have discovered that a horse can carry 20% of its body weight, so my calculations indicate that Harry (450kg approx (992lbs)) can carry comfortably a person weighing 90kg (198.42lbs)- Although I say Harry can only carry 15% because he is finely built, but this still only indicates that he can carry a 67.5kg person (148.81lbs)!!!!!
This means that as long as us tall riders can keep our weight down we can ride basically any horse or pony (as long as they ain't much shorter then 14hh, and squarley built with large barrel to take up leg)!!!
I am extremelly happy, and just thought i'd share my research with everybody out-there who worrys about being too big for their horse.
I hope I haven't bored you completly with my techno talk, i tried to keep it descrete LOL
P.S - here is a picture of me (5ft8) yesterday on my 15.3hh TB. PLEASE ignore my long reins and awful position, we just came back from XC schooling and he was a little fired up, was trying to hold him still for the camera LOL
P.P.S - here is also another picture of me on Harry a year ago in action, to show my length of body on him etc (sorry mum sucks at taking photos so i hardly have any up-to-date one, my riding has improved alot)
I think you look perfect on your guy! :)
I'm not so much tall, rather long-legged. I like my 16.1" Paint that fits me just fine. Though according to the 20% rule, my horse could carry 240 pounds! Good to know, haha!
How much weight a horse can carry goes beyond 20% as a rule of thumb. See some stuff here:
No pictures of me, but this 13 hand mustang seems to have no trouble cantering around with my 175 lbs...although my 5'0" daughter-in-law looks a better match:
BSMS, I must say that I am in love with little pony mustang. He's just so stout and adorable, I would love to have him at my house and just see how he would do with some roping .
OP, I agree that you don't need to worry even a bit about your horse. He'll have no trouble at all carrying you and truthfully, he looks much bigger than ~1000 pounds.
I am a bit shorter than you and weigh a bit more and I commonly ride horses that are 14 hands to 15 hands and weigh about the same as your boy and they have zero problems carrying me. Shoot, I just sent a pony home that stood about the same size as BSMS's little mustang friend but was a bit lighter and he had zero problems carrying me and my 40 pound saddle (together we totaled about 175 pounds + or -) for 8+ hours a day working cattle.
Mad, I'm 5'9" and my qh is just 14'3. So far she doesn't mind me to be tall (and I don't mind her to be short). :D
I'm just under 5'9" & my horses have been 14.2-16hh.I feel& look just as comfortable on the smaller mounts if not more so, than the taller. :D
Im with you, don't worry about it! I am 5'9" and weigh any where from 115- 125 lbs. Depending on the time of year and where I am working. I start little cutting horse colts and my little bay horse is only 14.3 hands and when fat weighs a little over a 1000lbs. He has packed me all over the desert for long hours, roped big cattle and happy to do it!

I'm 5'11" and never in my life have I had a problem with a horse getting tired carrying me! They're a lot stronger than we think ;) I'm comfortable on anything from 15hh up!!
