My horse has been given new supplements to his feed. He is of course, eating around them and leaving nothing but the supplements. I added sugar syrup, peanut butter, and sweet feed to the supplements. Peanut butter has a bit of a masking effect, and I thought surely the sugar would lure him in. But alas, little luck. He did eat more of the supplements, but still not the full ration. It is important he eats these due to his arthritis. Any ideas on what to add to the supplements? These are all of course, later added to his feed. I don't want to dilute or change the supplements in any way by adding ingredients. If it helps, he is currently on:
Corta-flx (which I've heard several horses dislike)
A vit. and min. supplement
and added MSM
I'd really like for him to eat these due to the money I spent as well, they aren't cheap!
Edited to add: I'm about to go to the store to try honey or molasses to add. Just hoping for more suggestions!
Re: Picky Eater
hi i also have a picky eating old horse and to get him to eat his suplerments i use chalf if u put them in chalf they have no chocie but to eat them and plus it tastes good
Hehe, sound like my old mare. Are any of the supplements in liquid form? I know my mare won't eat the liquid stuff because it's flavored and she hates the flavoring. Try making him a bran mash and see if he will eat the supplements like that. If he won't eat the sugar, he probably won't eat the mollasses either. Or try feeding one supplement at a time mixed with a small amount of grain and see which one it is that he doesn't like. If there's only 1 then you might end up having to make a past and give it to him in a syringe. He will hate it and it will be a pain for you to do everyday, but at least the stuff will get down him.
You do have a problem, the joys of the picky eater.
You sound like you have tried a lot of good options, alas with no result.
You could try malasus, it didn't work with my mare, but I ended up coring out an apple placing the stuff inside and what do you know she ate it, don't be fooled though, they get wise after a while, so you may have to give her apples without the stuff in it, so they won't think the apple always has the stuuf in it.
you could also ask the vet if there is anything else you could use.
