feeding the older horse, help!
hey guys, ive got a 17year old tb X wb mare. im having real difficulty in putting weight on her, she in a heavyweight turnout rug now and its not even that cold in the uk! where she is so skinny! shes wormed on a regular basis, and she is up to date with teeth etc.

can any one suggest any fattening feeds that i could try her on?

her dinners atm are Alfalfa A chaff, sugar beet, Equi Jewel rice bran and baileys number one. all are supposed to be good for weight gain, any help much appreciated!

Huh, sorry, not much help here, if her teeth have been done, she doesn't have worms and is being fed that grain... It could be something else, such as Ulcers, so I would have the vet check her out. Also, could she be lacking a important mineral or vitamin in her diet? Does she have a stressful enviroment such as no other horses around, or only an hour or two of turnout and such? Also, I would highly recommend free choice grass hay, with supplemented Alfalfa hay, as that can help horses. What are her living conditions like? Pasture 24/7, or night stalling and turnout during the day?

What are the amounts of those feeds she is getting? What short of work is she doing?

Also you say her "dinners" - are you referring to multiple meals a day by that one title, or is that feed she is receiving once per day at "dinner" time? If it is the former, how many times per day does she receive the feed?
