If you've got a horse, that doesn't stop nibbling at things what should you do? I saw him today biting his feed container, a lead rope, and other items. Sometimes he'll attempt at biting a person...?? Any suggestions? Thanks!
Is this horse bored? How old? Stalled alot? My sisters horse does alot of "gumming" of stuff/ I think this might have been since he was a show Morgan before we got him and he might have gotten bored in the stall. It also might just be his perosonality lol. :) Would he enjoy a toy of some sort? Something to push around? If he was nibbling at people, I would give him a smart "tap" under the chin when he does it...remember, three second rule though! Do it right away, just so he gets the message. Not enough to make him headshy or anything.
My five year old bites everything. He figured out how to pull his own safety release knot... If you put anything near his mouth, for any amount of time he'll pick it up and usually throw it at you or someone near by. He's a stinker. :)
Sounds like my guy...he puts everything under the sun in his mouth. I don't make a huge deal out of it, he's young with a very short attention span and he's not malicious. When I'm working with him, I try not to let him stand around doing nothing; that just invites trouble. If you work in a business-like fashion, its usually very easy to redirect them. Nipping people and pushing on people gets him the same reaction: a very loud NO and aggressively making him move; yielding the forequarters, backing, whatever. The only time I "hang out" with him is after I've worked with him; nibbling, pushy behavior is testing behavior. After groundwork, he is always more respectful and willing to let me love on him to my heart's content :P
My 3 year old does that too. I just clap loudly and if she doesn't leave it alone then I'll go and tap her neck and then after that I'll tap her in the face and usually she leaves it alone.
