Bush Riding

1 Attachment(s)
Does anyone else here ride in the bush? I mean, actually in the BUSH, not riding on pre-made trails. The pic below is where I ride 90% of the time. I actually have a few trails; you can see it just off the left ear of my horse. This is actually a pretty good trail for us. Some of my "trails" are just wide enough for us to get through. Actually today, I got my leg clipped on a tree, just too tight. I'm about due for an afternoon with the sweed saw.

I love to "off road" it, unfortunately, the majority of places to ride are either fields, roads or county/state designated areas, so unless you have your own land, it is very difficult to do. It is particularly dangerous in my area, as there are many neglected barbed wire fences that are grown over or broken because the area used to be mostly cattle and the majority of them are lost or forgotten and left to decay.

I get the use of 40+ acres of woods, streams and ponds this summer, so until we get trails on it, you can bet I will be out there anyway!

We ride in a similar type area. Fairly tightly packed with cedar trees. *not the exact place we ride, but this is the field along side of it.* Husband laughs at me, because I come out with tree branches in my hair. Levi, my horse, is 16hh, Hondo, his, is 14....yea.

Yay!

Nice to hear others doing the same! Remnants of the bush in hair? Yup, me too.

Roperchick -- what's "goatbrush?"

Grayshell -- Yes, unexpected / unknown barbed wire is the worst. Believe it or not, even on my own property I am still finding barbed wire back in the bush where it doesn't make any sense for it to be there. And it's never at a height -- just enough off the ground to get caught on unsuspecting feet.

Anyone else?

Most of my riding these days is off trail since we're surrounded by a very large tract of woods where there are no houses and no paths. It's always an adventure in weaving through the trees and dodging low limbs, but our mares actually like it more than riding on trails for some reason. To be honest, the biggest challenge is not getting lost...I've relied on our horses so many times to get me home that I started putting ribbons on trees to guide me.
