Leather bits
So I was browsing my local tack store when a non-horsey man came in looking fora a lunge line when shown one he said "that's basically a leash I should just by that?" I stifled my laughter and reminded myself he wasn't a horse person. He did know what a bit was though and upon seeing them stated "why do you make them out of medal? That's mean they should be made of leather."
Correct me if I'm wrong but horse spit and leather probably isn't a great combination

Funny enough I remember a thread while back (not sure it was in "Tack" or in "Training") with someone posting a bit made of leather. Personally I think it's not a good idea (plus I bet many horses won't like the taste/feel in 1st place).

Betcha a horse could chew through that bit.

I'd be willing to bet on that. Have you ever seen a wooden fence that has been near a horse? I swear horses are part buzz saw.

I've never heard of that but I couldn't see it being a good idea.. Is there any benefit at all using a leather bit vs a metal one?

Just depends on what you want, what your horse likes, and what you're doing. Some (most) horses won't chew a bit, so it's not really a problem. Some horses like a bit that conforms to their mouths; that's the philosophy behind a Nathe bit. It's sure not for every horse, but might work on some.

Hm. I guess you learn something new every day :)

I was thinking the reaction or leather and horse spit could cause the leather to...erode? Is that the right word ? Deteriorate?

It will stiffen, yes, and will eventually have to be replaced, but should still last awhile...unless you do have a chewer.
