Chilled Horse - snotty nose/fever

I picked up a rescue horse on Dec. 30th. She's a two year old quarter horse filly, about 13.3 and not too underweight. We gave her her first set of shots and wormer that first day. Everything was fine for several days. However two nights a go i gave her a bath. It was a bout 50 degrees but we have hot water and an enclosed barn. However, the next morning she had a VERY snotty nose, yellow-ish colored discharge and a fever of 103. She was still eating, drinking, and pooping. after some time to herself outside in the nice sun that morning (it was about 50 and sunny again) her fever went down to 101. However this morning she is just as snotty and her fever was back up. Does anyone have ideas on why this happen? Because of the bath or possibly a reaction to the vaccines? and any suggestions on how to make her feel better? thanks.

Call your vet and talk to them.

Unfortunately, when you take on a new horse, you never know what will happen. I don't think it has anything to do with giving the filly a bath due the the mild weather and your heated water and barn.

I'm worried about the fever. She could have a bacterial infection. The only thing that will help that is antibiotics prescribed from your vet. She could have a virus but then it could be contagious to any other horses on the property.

Keep her away from other horses, and have your vet out.
