western riders, talk to me about saddles

For those days when I want the security of riding with a horn, I have an Aussie saddle. It's a lovely saddle and I really like it, but it doesn't fit my horse. Even with the $70 fitment correction pad I bought it is too wide and slides back to an improper position on him. I've decided that rather than continue to fuss with it and try to get it to fit I'd just rather sell it and get something that fits without having to mess with it. I'd like to still have the option to ride in a saddle with a horn if I feel like it, so I'm thinking about getting a western saddle. The problem is, I'm an english rider and know pretty much zilch about western saddles! I need help! Can I even use a western saddle with my boy? He's an Appendix QH but his body is very TB-ish. In an english saddle he takes a medium or medium-wide. Here are two pictures of him. The first is more recent, from back in October when I moved him; the other is from 2005? and is a very good shot from the side with him standing almost perfectly square.

What are you looking for...new, used or custom? It would be best if you had a tack store close by and you could trailer him to the store and try different saddles on him.

Of course you can use a western saddle on him! I'm sure there's a saddle out there to fit him. Do you have any fitters in your area? That would be where I'd start. They'll bring a bunch of saddles to try on him and you'll get a good idea of what will/won't fit and where to start looking for one.

I am sure I will have to go with something used, unless I get enough for the Aussie that I could buy a new Wintec. (I'm sure some people hate Wintec western saddles as much as some people hate Wintec english saddles, but I have a friend who has one for her horse and absolutely loves it, so until I sit in one I'm not going to rule out that brand.)

I have no idea if there are any fitters in my area. I'm an english rider and I know pretty much nothing about western riding or western saddles or where to buy them or which stores are good and which aren't... Like I said, I need help!

Are there any places online in the western world where I could mail in a wither tracing and have a professional give me advice on "your horse needs an XYZ western saddle"? I found that service from Trumbull Mountain very helpful, at least as a starting point, when I was looking for a good english saddle a year ago.

All this business about bars and skirts and flares and different saddles depending on the intended use (roping, cutting, barrels, trail, etc.) makes me want to go find a bar, LOL.

why not try a treeless? they have western ones and they are great! Mine justs has the swell....Your boy is pretty high withered so the pitch of the saddle is going to be higher....Let me try and find you something to help you out.

why not get an aussi saddle that fits ? Downundersaddelry should be able to fit one for you with some wither tracings , measurements and pictures.
