What would you do?
If you've visited my thread in Health, you know that I'm having problems with my current barn.
I specifically asked my barn owner to get the vet to do the following to Maia the next time he was out:
- check her teeth for age and signs that she might need floating soon. I do NOT want floating done, I just want to know if she needs it fairly soon or not.
- please get the west nile and strangles vaccination.
*please note: no indication of any approval for anything but the above.
Soooo... I just got the bill. Over $300 later...
My barn owner approved floating (and yes I know I've mentioned it before, I didn't realize how much the vet charged at the time, and figured the damage had been done, so why complain about it? but now I'm furious) - $120 plus sedation: $40 = total of $160 for floating which I didn't approve.
THEN on top of that charge, she also approved the vet to do a 4-way vaccination, which I did not ask for! Firstly, she's already had the vaccination, back in March... so now she's had the 4-way twice within 3 months.
I don't know what to do. A lot of you know I'm already having problems with the BO blowing up at me for a simple question... but now this? I'm at a loss.
Thanks for reading... you can have a cookie now :D
My suggestion would be to:
A) Give your b.o. all instructions in writing
B) Be present during vet visits with your horse
C) Find a new barn
I would be pretty angry too, if something like that happened to me, I'd be looking for a new place. Especially if this keeps happening, I usually give people three chances.
Ok, that is just unacceptable. And you shouldn't have to pay for that. Make your BO pay! Lol.
I would definitely look for a new barn. :?
sounds like "sit down" time.
Explain the reasons WHY (obvious to everyone but the BO, evidently) you don't want things done that you don't approve of (cost, over vaccination, etc.)
Ask if there is a better way for you to ensure what gets done is what you want. (a whiteboard, email, little scrap piece of paper with notes on it, etc.)
Provide her with a vaccination history (to better get it through her thick skull ;) )
heck, she might have thought she was doing you a favor to have all of that stuff done at once to avoid additional trip charges...she may have no clue (unfortunate that she is the one running the barn, eh?)
BUT - if you are at all concerned about the safety and well being of your horse, and you don't think a sit down will work, i would begin to search for another place.
I would be SO mad at the point I wold sit down with the BO ans tell her i told you that I didnt want this done I just wanted it to be checked and she has already had her shots so why you give ok it to her???????????????
I would be furious!
Iow nlns sdoio rwsie. msidf ........kehosa;eoa;...oh...sorry I was talking with my mouth full! *puts cookie down*
I would pay it and be angry. :x  I would also concider whether or not there is another decent barn in your area. if not, I would see if you could have your "own" vet come out. That in itself would eliminate the miscommunication. If you cannot use your own vet I'd try to have a sitdown with the BO. Sometimes BO's become mini gods because they are the only one in the area. I agree though that 3 strikes and your out. Its a tough spot to be in. :?
Dumas, thank you for that laugh! I needed it!
I found out that they're feeding my horse Greenfeed.... that's what many people use as bedding for cows.
Maia will be moved as soon as I find a good facility for her :)
I guess what just means you need to move to my barn...
Id just refuse to pay.
I think I'd be calling the Vet too. That seems pretty high for floating and a shot. I just got my bill out to check what we pay for floating. It was $136 for 2 horses sedate and float. plus there is an Rx on there i think it was antibiotics. We take them into his clinic, but still that seems awfully high.
The highest bill I've gotten was $437 and that was for 4 horses and 6 dogs vaccinated plus trip charge since he does all that here.
