Mare won't lower head, has had an injury
I recently bought a huge buckskin mare with a wound on her head... She is 8 years old and I am trying to break her. However, I need to keep her wound clean and am unable to control her head... I have done exercises to try to teach her to lower her head and at first I was making progress, but now she is getting worse and worse. I am 5'2" and she is around 16 hands, maybe bigger, and around 1500 lbs. I cant afford a trainer but can do it myself if someone has a suggestion.

What have you been doing to teach her to lower her head? Do you have any pics of the wound?

I will put downward pressure on her head and as she lowers it, I release the pressure and praise her. I don't have any pics of the wound but will try to get some.

Many horses are taught to bow by using treats. The treat is offered lower and lower along with a que until the horse is taking the treat between his legs. Eventually the treat is deleted and the que is the only signal.

I considered the treats, she doesn't like treats, she will sometimes eat them but will not go out of her way to get them... They don't interest her.
I will try that starting tomorrow though
