To Roach or Not To Roach?
Okay, My Appaloosa Mare has a really short mane. It is barely long enough to braid or band, I can't do nice looking braids or bands. I have to take around 3in. sections to get a half-way decent band. It looks really weird when I am at shows. Should I Roach it or not? for Hunt Seat and Western.

Also if I roach it would I still braid her tail for Hunt Seat?

Could you share a picture of your mare? I have no idea how a roach will be looked upon by judges, but we can at least tell you if your mare can pull off the roached look or not. Some horses have the neck for it and others don't.

2 of them are her with her mane banded for western.

I think her mane texture & length are fine for banding, if it were my horse I wouldn't roach it. You might have to braid very tight & tape for english.

I don't like removing much of what God gave horses for their protection, so I vote no. Also, you can do a bit of googling & find these mane & tail growing products that, judging by the photos, really work (we're talking serious fairy tale manes & tails!). I'd buy a bottle & see! :)

She is an Appy, it is very unlikely to ever grow. I have tried to braid it. It doesn't work. I only get like 5 braids down her entire neck. The top photo was taken when we first got her last may. other 2 were taken last september

I would say no. My horse has a pretty sad excuse for a mane aswell. I have avoided touching it and added flax seed to his diet, plus MTG treatment and it seems to help. Apps naturally have less hair but you can try these things aswell.

I'm also thinking that with an Appy's sensitive skin, the mane should be left long as protection from the sun, both on her neck & on the "scalp".

could you just put a slinky on her and band it for the shows? thats what i did with charlie because the little turd kept rubbing his mane off... it looks long enough for banding...

You'd be suprised what happens when you roach. It's like taking 50 pounds of weight off your horses neck. Sometimes, they don't pull it off too well O.o
Then again, my horse has a bit of a fugly neck as it is:
