Hey, I have a mare who doesn't seem to lose her winter coat properly.
I'm not sure on the reasons behind it because she does eventually lose it, so it's not cushings, her nutrition is pretty good her paddocks are well stocked with grass she always has a good quality salt/mineral block available, and she is wormed regularly.
I've started giving her baths and grooming her more often. Does anyone have any ideas?
She does grown an abnormally long and thick winter coat but that is the only thing I can think of that might contribute anything.
Could just be genetics :) My gelding used to be dubbed the woolly mammoth because he would grow such a long, thick winter coat and it seemed like May or June before he shed. I used to have to trace clip him just to be able to ride him in the winter (had a heated indoor at the time and he got too hot).
Now he lives in a heated barn, but an unheated indoor to ride in, so he hasn't really grown much coat, which is good, his first recognized show is early May this year! If she sheds normally, you have nothing to worry about. If she gets too warm, you could always clip her!
Let me guess....
She is older, has a cresty neck and a funky topline. I'd be checking her for IR and cushings issues. Pretty girl but she is fat possibly dangerously so.
Well I've looked at cushings symptoms again and she recently developed fat deposits above her eyes, So I called the vet out straight away and they are running tests now to see what could be wrong.
By the way those photo's are very old, due to excersise and diet she's now a very healthy weight but thank you for you're concern.
Now I'm just hoping and praying
I'll cross my fingers for you and your mare. Good on you for taking action!
Good luck! Would love to here how it goes.

Thanks guys I think if she does have it, She's only showing very early symptoms so...Even though is no permanent cure it's very treatable.
Now I'm going to go pamper her.
