"Head Groom" interview.. advice needed!
I think I'm an obsessive planner-- I like to think things through to the last minute detail. Therefore, I am also an obsessive worrier-- I get so caught up in details I syche myself out!! Lol
Point being, I have a job interview. It's pretty much a dream job, and I'm super duper excited. The job is a head groom at a professional eventing facility in VA. I'm in OK.
I will move out there early June if all goes well. My "interview" is actually an extended stay (a week, actually) in mid March.
I'm not sure what to expect on the trial, interview, whatever. I was thinking through what I'd pack (yes, I'm that pumped about going lol) and... What do I wear?! Lol typical girl question. But seriously. I was thinking just jeans/tshirt, but would a polo/breeches be better? I'm also packing nicer shirts/jeans/shorts just in case we go out to dinner or whatever.
Also, I know its a long shot, but has anyone done a trial like this before? I kind of assume I'll just be "trained" and given a basic overview of what my duties would be, and maybe even work each day as if I'm already hired. I have no idea.
Any tips to be the best groom they could imagine? I'm easy to work with and I'm pretty ambitious, upbeat, and hard working, but I'd love some tips to help stand out as well.
The week's trial, is you'll be on the job and they see if they want you or not?
Yes, pretty much... Though I do get the sense its almost already a done deal... they just need to make sure I'm not a creep! :D Just kidding. It's not that I'm worried about not getting the job-- I'm confident that I'm qualified, I just feel the need to make a good impression and make sure they realize I'm qualified! Lol. And it's sort of a trial for them as well... If they're slave drivers that train their horses with a fishing pole and a carrot I'll probably not return!
I woud definitely pack your barn clothes, but upscale, nice ones, you got a week to make an impression so do it up right. Good luck!
As a "head" groom, would you be over-seeing other grooms/barn help?
I would not wear jeans and a tee-shirt if it was me. For a head position, you want to look your best, and look like a horse-woman on top of that. I think maybe a nice pair of breeches, polished boots and a polo would be fitting. Jeans seem so...blah.
I wouldn't go over-the-top with your hair, but I probably wouldn't do a simple pony-tail for the initial interview. Maybe a half up-do? Use some make-up, but don't go over-board. Light eye-shadow, maybe some light eyeliner and mascara. Foundation to hide any black eyes that you might have due to not being able to sleep from all of the excitement! :) Keep it simple, but professional. Less is more. ;)
This is very cool. If they are waiting until March for you to come out for a week trail period, I'd say your chances are very good. Plus the fact that you are in OK and they are in VA, seems like they like you already.
Despite the title Head Groomer, I suspect you will be doing a lot of shovelling, Clarify whether this title really means Chief Manure Shoveller. It usually does.
Lol! Yeah, luckily this barn only has 10 stalls! "Head Groom" or even "Groom" is acutally misleading! Most groom jobs actually consist on little grooming!
But I'm a fan of barn work, and if it allows me to rub elbows with some top trainers, it is well worth it ;)
