Thinking about just loading up my horses and taking off for Nevada

Or someplace like that. Nothing much is happening here and I have these horses who are just sitting around burning through hay. I want to do something, get out of here.

Was wondering if any of you real cowboys and girls (I'm lookin at U Cowchick) had any advice about this particular idea. I can handle a rope some, not real experienced but continually getting better.

What do you guys reckon?

Ian, I will PM you at some point today.

California. Wouldn't be adverse to working here either, I just don't know anyone in the business :-P

Well if you do, you better keep us at HF up to date on your experiences! I'd bet there are more people than just me who would LOVE the opportunity to head off in whatever direction we feel like, but are too stuck to make it happen. Let us live vicariously through you! :-)

Haha I tend to have that effect. In a past life I traveled around a lot as a musician and lived out of a sleeping bag most of the time. That's why I think that cowboying would agree with me.

Really I'm willing to do anything if I can stay a-horseback. Whether it's a ranch or a stable or an outfitter, doesn't matter to me so long as there's a place for me an' these critters to go and a little salary to eat on. I'm not as able to work all day afoot anymore due to a bad motorcyle wreck a few years back. So anything I'd do afoot would either have to be fairly light or not something that requires a real fast and hard pace all day long. This left leg of mine has a finite number of miles in it per day. :-P

If you are wanting to learn about cows and working cattle with horses, try a feedlot as a pen rider. They are sometimes willing to take someone who is green if that person really wants to learn the business and is willing to work hard.

I recommend that if you don't know cattle, their general health and illnesses and don't have really handy horses yet. Ranching is all about raising beef. We are just fortunate to have horses as fantastic co-workers.

Dude strings offer some horseback hours, but saddling and unsaddling a string of twenty might bother the legs. Outfitting, at least in my area, doesn't offer much horseback time and you're more like the waiter, housekeeper, cook, and chore boy for the hunters than a horseback hand.

I don't want to work on no ranch but I want to be where there is no dang snow and frozen lakes. Swing by & pick up me & my nags please. Hope your headed to that Lake Havasu area....

I can dig it, boots. Me an' Cowchick were just talking about the feedlot possibility. I'm not too far from the one in Coalinga CA. I'm workin' right now on getting these horses I've got to where they can go to work and be legitimately on the payroll. Saddle 'em, hobble 'em, ride 'em and stand 'em tied for awhile like they had a real job. :-P
