Mustangs. Please help!

I am looking to adopt a Mustang next summer and eventually use it for Barrel Racing. I know that Mustangs are not the traditional Barrel Racing breed, but I am not looking for traditional.

Would someone who has had personal experience with Mustangs please be able to tell me if they think a Mustang would be able to excel in the circuit.

I have a lot of respect for this breed and hate how people look down on them because they are not purebred.

well I don't have experience but if you pick out one with appropriate conformation and start him slowly I think the breeds hartiness and natural agility should get you far

yeah, thats what i was thinking.

I mean they are a mixture of breeds from over thousands of years. Just because they do not have a fancy blood line does not mean that they cannot succeed.

I don't know what you mean by "not purebred".... I mean... a mustang is a mustang... You know? Kind of like an american... little bit of whatever fell in the pot....

You need to go to the BLM site and read the rules because you have to have a specific height fence and turn-out... there is a template they have put together that pretty much tells you how to feed them... (it's like you hand feed for a couple weeks in a stall) and so on and so forth.. turn out is done a specific way etc...

I looked into it years ago and someday I would still like to, I had just decided that at that point I wasn't ready for the responsibility. They really can turn out to be really nice horses but you have to treat them special and you need patience....

Yeah.
I have looked into that.

By not being purebred I mean they are a mixture of of different breeds. They started out as Spanish Horses but throughout the years, horses have been released or escaped and joined the herds. Like some Mustang herds have draft horse characteristics because some where down the line a draft horse became a part of the herd and some Mustang herds resemble QH's because of the same reason. So i don't really believe they are purebred because they have so many different breeds in them that they have all kind of blended together and every Mustang is different than another due to its origin.
