Fly Sheet question
Toby gets chewed to death by flies - while other horses stand next to him fly free. I tried various fly sprays as well as gave him a Citronella shampoo bath (it said for fly infested areas). While the barn we board at is not fly infested, they all seem to pick on Toby - to the point where he has streams of blood on his legs and neck.
I bought the Roma fly leg wraps and the Amigo fly sheet (with neck cover) for him. But he is sweating SO bad in them. He was standing under the shelter with a giant fan blowing on him and he still was soaking wet.
Do I let him sweat and be fly free or do I let the flies chew on him and not sweat? :?
feed him apple cider vinegar and let him be sweat and fly free :)
if the acv doesn't work, i would suggest fly sheet only if you can hose off the sweat every day :)
Oh...that's sounds like a hard deal...poor guy.
There seem to be a variety of feed-through fly controls. One has the apple cider vinegar in it along with other ingredients. I've also heard of ones with garlic powder in them. Some brands include Inside-Out by Cheval Int. , Garlic by Equine Science, and Get Away by Jeffers.
I don't know how well any of them work but I am thinking about trying one myself.
I hope things get better for Toby!! Good luck!!
Kensington or Textilene sheets work wonders. They are made out of almost the same material as those woven plastic (textilene) lawn chairs, and are durable. They sit kind of on top of the horse, are fly proof and nearly mosquito proof. Because of their design, they are very airy and breathe really well. I went to see my mare in thirty plus degree (celcius) weather and she wasn't sweaty.
Here's the one I have:
oops, its not the Amigo, its the Rambo fly sheet!
I have the amigo....I don't have sweating problems with my mare but, I live in a very 'dry' climate....no humidity.
Baker sheets do have good reviews...but I bet that Rambo wasn't too cheap...I would try a 'feed through', like the apple cider vinegar that was mentioned by Kickshaw....might be cheaper than buying another sheet...
Sounds like you have humidity?
