Does anyone tap their maple trees?
Because of the extreamly warm weather we are tapping our trees starting tomorrow.

My friend does-she is talking about helping us tap ours, but we have so few, it might not be worth it. You need SO much sap to do anything.

The first year we tapped trees we got enough syrup for a pancake. We get more efficent every year. Not much of a production area in Missouri, so it is kind of a novelty. Last year we produced 18 gallons. Still it is a labor of love.
The best book to read is "Backyard Sugaring" it is informative but the author shows how to produce syrup on a shoestring budget, deffinatly our motto at our farm. Good luck, it is always a party at boiling time.

It was not a good year here, The weather was just to warm. Our season was over weeks ago, I only got about 14 gallons of finished product. Thats about 60% of last years. I heard it is going to be a bad year everywhere. What about your area?

That's pretty neat!

We do tap trees almost every year. Although this year we weren't able to do it because the weather warmed up too fast.

That's really cool! I live in Maple country (i.e. Quebec, Canada) and I'm afraid my maple syrup comes from a tin at the grocery store....

I can't believe how it warmed up, we almost missed the entire season. I kept thinking it will get cold again, If it had not been for hubby going out and tapping, it would have been over. As it was we normally get about 20 gallons of finished product, this year we got about 14 gallons.:-(
