Toes in?

Hey guys!

I recently saw some pictures of myself jumping in my lesson and I realized that I have a tendency to poke my toes out a bit over the jumps. It's not that bad, but I wear longish spurs with the horse I lease and I'm poking her by accident over the jump with her. You can tell in the pictures she's not happy with it.

Do you guys have any suggestions for what I can do to improve, and keep my toes in over the jumps?

I'm fine with keeping my toes in on the flat, because I'm really aware of when I'm using leg and when I'm touching her with the spurs. I just can't keep them in over jumps.

I'd appreciate any tips! Thanks!

try angling your stirrup differently so it crosses the ball of your foot from behind your big toe on the inside to your little toe on the outside, so that the outer side of the stirrup is slightly ahead of the inside....if that makes sense?! however your toes dont look like that are out super far, as long as you have a 45 degree angle or less between the horses side and your foot you are usually okay.

I ride with my stirrups the way Jumper explained, I would try that if you dont ride that way already (:

Thanks for the tip! I'd never thought about that. Gonna try it out when I do my flatwork on Saturday to get used to it. And yeah, I know they're not terrible but Maggie pins her ears back over the jumps so I think it bothers her!

i love your pic, how high do you jump?

Sphi 02-04-2012 08:17 PM

I've jumped like 2'9'' - 3' on another horse but with her I've been doing 2'6'', she can't jump as high. :) And the saddle isn't new it's just a schoolie saddle, it's like a cheapish looking leather xD

you could always take off the spurs

I could. She needs the spurs, though.

why does she need them ? you could carry a crop. crops are nice, because its really hard to accidentally beat your horse with one.
