Is my mini too fat?
I am a first time mini owner, have had her for a week now and she is very cute. I have set her up in an area similar to the small paddock she lived in with her previous owner with very short grass and give her a little hay as well. Just wondering if she would be considered 'overweight' or if her weight is ok? I know she has definitely got a belly on her but in comparision to my neighbours mini gelding she nowhere near as fat as he is. I am probably also giving her more exercise that she got previously, we go for walks every day and I have lunged her a couple of times too.

Honestly? Nope! It's a grass belly, but you'll have that, and it's normal in miniatures who aren't being shown. For the miniatures that I don't keep in show condition, they look like that year round, even the show minis do when we have big gaps between show dates :)

No, she is not to fat. My minis always look like that between shows and sometimes even heavier during the winter. Looks like a grass belly to me.

I think she looks great! My mini yearling gets 1/2 cup gain 2x daily, and hay. He stays at around the same body condition as yours. Cute mini!

Just a big belly! Super cute, though. Have fun with her.

Thanks for the replies! She is very cute, I can see how they can quickly become addictive : ) Just waiting on her grazing muzzle to arrive so that she can spend some time in the big paddock and work off some of that tub. Fingers crossed that she will tolerate it.

If you really want to trim up her belly, lots of trot work. Lunge at a trot and go for little "walks" at a slow trot. Within a couple weeks she will trim up underneath and also have a lot more muscle over her topline if she carries herself well.

No, but your dog looks chunky, KIDDING! What a nice little horse, she eats the grass & doesn't munch the flowers.

Congrats on your new family member, she looks beautiful. :D
I agree with minihorse927, some regular exercise and she will tone right up.
What's her name?
