Hi everyone !!
I have a 5yr old green roke mare named Fara,
When our friends got her she had ribs showing and then she gained 25 or so pounds and no more ribs. They had her about 2 months before we brought her home sunday.. She has no grass in her pen and is in an area about the size of a round pen, untill her bigger pen gets finished... We feed her southern feeds ? Which is a cheap brand of feed.. Which we are swiching her over to a higher quailty feed called horsemans edge.... She gets fed grain twice a day.. Also she gets 2 flakes up hay in the morning, 1 flake in the after noon, and two at night...
PLease give me your opions on what im doing.. I Can barely make out a rib pattern on her now but is that normal for a horse of grass ? She weights 700-800 pounds,..
Can you also let me know how many cups of feed she should be getting ??? The previous owner just showed me to measure out the feed by the scoop...
Sounds like you are doing good on the hay...
I'm pretty sure that Purina has feeding guidelines on the bag somewhere...or maybe on their website. Strategy is a pretty good feed...I wouldn't call it "low quality."
General rule of thumb is to be able to feel the ribs but not see them.
And you don't want "hay belly"...you want the belly to be nice and trim from girth to stifle area. Found this fact sheet showing how to score your horse's body condition...
Im all messed up... She is eating a brand called southern feeds ?? 13%protien... Im swiching her to horsemans edge 16%protien...
