Hasnt been riden in two years please help!

Hi,
I have an 17 year old appy mare.
She does know how to ride, she knows back up, and is mainly just a pleasure horse. But i havent riden her for two years. Yea i know thats REALLY BAD!
But when i get back from MO (in a month) Im going to build a nice round pen, and begin training her. I rode her just before we left and that didnt go to well. She isnt really use to the saddle.
So what are some tips and methods you got that will let me be in control while riding her?
She always goes towards the pasture. Thats why i want to ride her in the round pen. HELP! i really want to start riding her again. but i dont just want to throw it on her back and risk getting hurt. last time i did that i nearly got hit by a motocycle.

GROUND WORK! that's the best place to start... gain her respect on the ground... lunging is the best thing to do, and lunging her with the saddle on will get her used to it as well as learning to listen to your commands and to respect you... after that when you feel comforatable you can start riding again gradually

Also you could start her just like you would start any horse...dont do the same thing over and over again...each time you work with her try something a little different then the last...and most important HAVE FUN!! :D

mlkarel2010 is definitely right. lunging with the saddle on always always is the right thing to do first. My friend has a 6 yo spotted draft who hasn't been ridden in two years. two years ago she barely got on him. Now she lunges him every day WITH the saddle on for a half an hour. then we stand on a mounting block and let him stand there. next, she puts her foot in the stirrup and stands on it for a minute then swings over and voila! he's great. remember training after two years doesn't take two days.

First and formost take the advice and work her first. I have a Appaloosa Stallion who had been broke as a three year old and hadn't been ridden at least 10 years but after only about 15 minutes of saddling him, we were able to get on and ride him across the hay field and back... He is of course an exceptional horse and had been ground worked alot.. Take care and have fun!!

THANKS! im so excited to start riding her again!
HOw long do you think it will be before i can ride her with the saddle. she is fine being ridden bareback. So i plan on doing that in the pen.
Do you have any tips on lounging i dont think she has ever lounged before i know i havent lol

^^^ I would lunge her with it any where from 3-7 times, depending on how she takes it, before I would get on her. Then I would just mount up and sit for a second and get down after lunging for about 2 or 3 days... then start slowling doing more, maybe walk a little bit then get off and then gradually do more each day
