Pregnant maiden mare without prenatal care
Hello everyone! Newbie here! I have some questions and I feel I might know some of the answers but I'd rather ask others and see what I get.

I bought a 4yo (so he said) black and white mare January 29th. He also told me she was bred in May to a black and white stud. Apparently another person adding mouths to feed just cause. But that's another story. Anyways, I doubt the horse to be 4. She is still out of proportion as far as legs to girth like a maybe 3yo, (I could be wrong) as well as when I look at her teeth she has no signs of her tusk/canines showing. As far as being bred he said his buddy had her palpated and she is pregnant. I doubt that she has been given any shots while being pregnant maybe even before that. Her coggins test was done in July but that's the only thing I think she is current on. The seller said he got her when she was a year old and she was very poor. I asked if she was at least healthy before he bred her and he says she was but even today she isn't as thick as I think she could be. One more thing before I start my questions. When I asked when she was bred his answer was a "um April or May".

I'm not 100% sure she's pregnant because her being a maiden mare and belly not like a brood mare. I've been told maiden mares can hide it all the way till they deliver. Although, her utters are kinda swollen compared to other maiden mares. Which the seller said he noticed that last month.

I know I can't make up for shots not given and certain shots are for certain times of pregnancy. So which ones should I give first?

I'm going to try to post pictures for other judgements. So confused and hope all goes well for this young mare who hasn't had a chance till now.

Thank you for reading!!!!

I would suggest getting your own vet to look her over. Check her to guesstimate when she would be due if she is pregnant.

I agree with SunnyDraco, a vet is going to be your best choice to answer all of your questions. They can give you a yes or no on if she is bred or not.

Sounds like you did a good thing getting her out of the previous owners hands. Nothing drives me crazy like an irresponsible owner that doesn't know how to correctly care for an animal.

I plan on taking her to the vet. I was just wanting opinions on pictures and advice. But I don't know how to post pictures. Help?

I asked that question a while back and you can (I haven't tried it yet). I think you have to go into full mode though instead of mobile mode.

You have to "go advanced" not just do a quick reply. And then go down to manage attachments and then you can add them directly from files on your computer. Or if you have them uploaded to a site like photobucket, you'll have to get the picture URL and then paste them into a reply on this thread. I hope that all made sense.

Please if you have comments on her growth, age, pregnancy, color, conformation or anything I am interested to know what she appears to be by looks. She's a very sweet laid back horse I intended for my kids. Thanks to all who took the time to read and respond!!!

Shes got a nice pattern on her.

Pregnant. Once shes ultrasounded, the vet can give you a guesstimate on how old the baby is and when she'll be due.

She looks mature enough physically to be a 4 year old.
