Arena too small-need more practice space!

so the arena at my barn is fairly small, all the shows i go to have big arenas and i want to practice fast on barrels but i don't have the room to do it so i am forced to take it slow at shows because i have never ran my horse as fast as i would like to for fear of getting me or him hurt! any suggestions?

Do time only runs and push him just that little bit more. Another thing could be do a collected canter on the shorter ends of the arena and on the longer ones really ask him to stretch out and run then come back to a collected canter and do that a few times like 2-3 laps just so you know he will come back to you. Also I suggested the time onlys because it won't hurt you in the money/points if he flares out bad or acts goofy but gives him that experience.

im just do the time only runs at fun shows anyway! im just afraid of him not turning or listening to me going faster!

Just depending on how small, you could set two barrels up and go between them. My home arena is narrow so we we set up two barrels length wise to get the horses to stretch out between barrels for larger arenas.

You could combine the shortening and lengthing exercise that I suggested with the one barrelracer23 suggested. If its only a time only don't ask for too much speed but just a little bit more and really sit and exagerate your ques that much more so he knows what you are asking, if you have trained him correctly it shouldn't be a problem.

are there no local arenas that are open for you to practice at?

all you have to do is get a contact number to whomever owns the arenas you show in and ask if they offer people to come on days when they have nothing going on to practice, most of ours around here allow this.

Yep..and if you're REALLY sweet and charming they will set up a time clock for you.
