Weird horse behaviour... My cousins (new) horse moves around a lot when tied up and freaks out when a horse enters or leaves the barn. He also kicks the stall with his front feet and paws vigorously when she walks away. Any ideas on why he does this or how it can be stopped? Thanks! Posted via Mobile Device |
These all sound like he's nervous being by himself and finds security with other horses. Pawing shows impatience usually, he probably doesn't like being tied. He is tied short enough that he can't get into trouble, right? Like a hoof through his rope? The owner just needs to work on more alone work. Maybe some re-focusing, sacking out, bonding, and reaffirming the idea that owner is herd leader and horse must respect and look to herd leader. |
The horse is in new surroundings so must feel anxious. Any time a horse is tied, he will be more suseptible to feelings of panic. He knows he is more vulnerable. Give him some time, he may settle down. |
Just find a very safe place and tie him up all day until he settles down. They are pretty unridable and untrainable as long as they are this upset and reactive. We have always just tied them out away from horses until they get over it and accept life as it is. |
I don't find this "weird" this just sounds like a horse who is anxious and outspoken about it ;) |
I agree with herdbound. Not 'weird', it's a horse being a horse and doing this because he hasn't been set up not to do it yet. It's normal for him and he's probably saying 'Hey, I don't know where I am, I'm on my own, I'm nervous and I need some guidance and someone to understand this.' Work slowly with his needs to try and 'stop' it. Hope your cousin can soon build a good relationship with him so he can feel more confident. :-) |

If by chance the horse does not drink water when offered a horse can go 12 hours before actually needing water. |
