That's why I don't get on one without it.

This happened to a lady about 1/2 mile down the road from me. She always rode her horse down the street. She went out one day, only got about 1/4 mile from her house and she was found lying on the side of the road with her horse standing over her.

The car passing by, happened to be an off duty paramedic and called the accident in. The horse had dirt all over it's side and the saddle. Apparently he stepped in a hole and the rider (who liked to ride without stirrups) fell off and hit her head on the pavement. An autopsy was done and that's all they could conclude. We originally thought she might have had a heart attack since she was in her 60's but nope. It's sad.

We don't have many accidents out here and not too many people have horses in my town. Word got around that it was ME that had been in the accident and our phone and my facebook page was blown up with people trying to contact us.

Makes you stop and think...

I often hear the excuse that people don't wear a helmet because they look dorky in them,or they're not very comfortable,or whatever. But I say,I'd rather be an uncomfortable dork than dead.Which is why I wear a helmet.Things happen, you can be the world's best rider and still fall off,so why not be safe rather than sorry..

So why isn't the moral of this story "Don't be stupid and make poor choices like riding without stirrups"? Ride horses that are appropriate to your level of experience and use the brains that your helmet is protecting.

"Every ride, Every time".
