My horse is snowing ......

And I'm not talking about dandruff. I'm talking about shedding. My horse and my friend Rubie's horse are already shedding. My horse is shedding especially. He's already splotchy in his coat with different tuffs everywhere. And I'm afraid of him getting sick. Help? Should I not worry about him getting sick? So lost. We generally get a big snow right before Easter. I'm just not sure what to think. Will he regrow it persay?

I wouldn't worry about it. So long as he has plenty of hay to eat if it gets cold and somewhere like a shed to get out of the wind/moisture, he'll be fine.

Ok. I just don't know what to think I can't blanket him but I'll just be sure to put down especially more shavings when it gets colder. He gets stalled every night.

All the horses at my boarding stable are shedding like crazy! Most of them are blanketed and in stalls at night, but they don't seem to believe us when we tell them that winter is NOT over yet and they are going to NEED that hair.

Your horse shoudl be just fine. We, good responsible horse owners, tend to underestimate what our horses can take weather wise. As long as he is well fed, he should be just fine.

Trust me I feed my boy plenty of good stuff. :) I'm glad I don't have to worry.

All of the horses at my boarding facility are also shedding, including my mustang. I am SO excited to see him in his sleek new summer coat. I've only had him since late October when he was just starting to get fuzzy. I've been feeding him black oil sunflower seeds religiously over the past couple of months too, and I can already tell that his new coat is coming in super soft. SO excited! ^_^

lol why is my mare the seemingly only horse on earth that isn't shedding??? My gelding is shedding, everyone else in the barn is shedding... she's just stubborn I guess :P

Mine is dropping hair like crazy as well. We had a day of good temps and sunshine last week so I took the opportunity to give him a full bath and used a soft curry on him. The hair in the drain when I cleaned it out for the next person was enough to make a small pony. It's been nice the past couple of days not to get brushes full of hair at two strokes :)

If it seems you are going to get a plummeting temp then think about blanketing. My barn usually blankets if the temps will drop below 42 right now and I have a medium weight blanket on mine generally, but we also had two nights in the past couple of weeks that went down to the teens where I swapped out to his heavweight.

I look at it as what they are used to. If they are out of the wind and generally used to the mid to high 30s to 40s, I won't necessarily blanket. When I look at a thin coat now, or rather thinner as he still has some thick areas, and the temps take a sharp drop, I'll blanket accordingly.

My horse is shedding a lot already too. We have had an incredibly mild winter, but who knows it's Wisconsin we could get a late winter snowstorm yet.

My horses won't be shedding for a few more months! I can't wait, my little boy has a 4 inch long beard, it looks hilarious on his little delicate head :D
