How do I correctly measure a gullet?

I'd always heard D-Ring to D-Ring across the front with a tape measure. But how come I end up with something like 7 inches...When most saddles I see described in the 27-33 centimeter range? 7 inches is definitely even close to that in centimeters!

What am I do doing wrong?

How the heck do they get that centimeter reading?

Sounds like you are trying to measure an English saddle. Most are measured in metric so a conversion table will work for you: Online Conversion - Common Length Conversions

7" is 17.78cm
