Recent Grad looking for advice/ help in obtaining a Career in the Equine Industry.
I am a 23 year old female that has recently graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a B.S. in Animal Sciences and a minor in Equine Science. I graduated in mid December 2011 and am currently back at home working a part-time job while applying to countless job openings, but rarely do I get any response back.
I wanted to know if there is something that I might be missing that would make me sound more professional. I have applied from jobs such as a groom to vet assistant and still have had no luck.
Most jobs seem to want professional experience and could care less about volunteer experience on horse barns, which is where my experience outside of college has come from.
I am currently in the Pittsburgh, PA area and looking to relocate towards the north east area such as Philadelphia, Delaware,Maryland etc. I am open to other places though as it seems like getting a horse job is like winning the lottery.
Please let me know if you have any suggestions, helpful websites, or any leads to something that would help me start a real career in the industry.
What type of horses do you have experience with? As in breeds/disciplines? And are you looking for anything with horses, or something in your field?
What exactly does your degree allow you to do?
I have worked with various ages and levels in western riding. Breeds: arabian, quarter horse, and mustang. Most of my experience was through Next Level Horsemanship where they break wild mustangs for people who don't know how to work with horses that have never been around people. They have also won the wild mustang challenge multiple times.
I can use my degree for any management position, general maintenance, sales, etc.. I would love to have something along training horses such as an assistant trainer, but it seems that just getting my foot in the door is a hassle, so any entry level position would be fine with me at this point. Most places that advertise on sites like yardandgroom.com state that there is room to advance which is what I am looking for.
dressage working student position
I have a position available in Wellington, Florida. An apartment is included and salary is negotiable. If you are interested in relocating, contact me at 817-648-5630 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
Girl, have you checked equiery.com? It's a Maryland-based, and I've seen ads for barn manager and alike positions there.
