My mare has lots of white flecking. I started a post about this a while ago, but just to find out if she's a bay roan, which we've ruled out.
Someone on that post said that white flecking can be from protein deficiency. My BO doesn't feed the best grain. It's Mane Menu by Blue Seal. And my horse only gets 4 quarts a day. Maybe 4.5 because i asked the BO to up her grain a bit since I work her almost everyday, not hard or anything, just light maintenance I guess. There's Saturday when I ride her for about an hour, but that's the longest we ride for.
She gets hay after breakfast and after dinner. It's decent hay, but it's not super rich. I actually had it tested when I went to the WHE. On a scale of 1-10 it's a 5 or 6 maybe.
Does anyone know if this is true? Or are there other signs of protein deficiency that I should be looking for?
here's a link to my first post if you want pictures; http://www.horseforum.com/horse-colo...-hairs-112370/
A protein deficiency will not cause white flecks. It will cause a rough, brittle, dull coat.

Can't find info on that particular feed, but grain/rich, starchy feed is not generally the best for horses & if your horse isn't in hard work, she may not need extra high energy rations anyway. If she is going to get this type of feed, it's important to feed it little & often. You don't say how much hay she gets - i doesn't need to be rich & you need to give some info on what that 'scale' means for it to have any meaning. I'd be ensuring she has free choice grass hay & a good nutritional supplement to balance her diet. Then you can feed extra 'hard feeds' as/if necessary if she is losing condition.
Unless you work them hard, horses do not generally need any more than hay and minerals.
