western saddle question
Is a western saddle supposed to be tight under the front bars when the horse turns his head or if his head is more up than a low headset? Naturally it would seem like it might a bit but just asking. Also I don't I put it too forward, maybe an inch or two behing the shoulder blade is where the concho is placed and in the beginning of the ride it seems fine as far as clearance in the front between the saddle tree and his body but when I ride for a while the saddle seems to move back (we did do a couple of steep hills). It is definetely not too wide. Should I be concerned? I did the wither tracings and pictures etc. and this is the saddle that was recommended for him, that was two years ago so I have done much research and am not totally clueless. My pad is either a 3/4 or a 7/8 5 Star, so it is a good one. maybe a breast collar would be advisable or could it be too narrow, it is a wide fqhb tree? thank you.
I wouldn't say "tight" under the bars, but you don't want big gaps either.
When you say "between the bars" do you mean on either side or is it too low for his withers? You could try a saddle with more wither clearance if you are sure its not too wide. The bars of the saddle shouldn't affect where he is able to put his head (head-set-wise). If they do, you have a fit problem :)
The shape of your horse can change quite a bit in two years, its possible that something that fit perfect two years ago, no longer works.
You could always see if a breast collar helps the slipping issue, but that could be a side affect of a fit problem.
We have a bunch of new breast collar headstall sets in if you want to take a look!
We would be more than happy to help you with new wither tracings!
GB, Yes, when a horse turns or puts his head down it does get little tighter in-between the bars.
The position of saddle placement is a guide using conchos, but to find each Horse natural Pocket for each Saddle, I place the saddle on the Horse with no pad and slide the saddle back and forth to find the Pock, visualize where this is and when saddling with pad put saddle in that place.
Horses can change a little over the years especially under 6 and over 15 years old , but if the Saddle is giving good sweat patterns and all other areas seem to fit well, maybe a Breast Collar will help since you are doing steep hills.
it seems too tight with no flare at all on the sides behind the withers, over the withers is plenty of room. I am wondering if the saddle slips back on the steep hills into the correct position.. or if it slips back just because of the hills and then gets in the wrong position
when i put it on him before I ride it looks pretty good.. don't have time right now but will put the pictures up soon as I can, that will help..thank you both for your help..and offers to help! ck back and I will get those pic's...
The first pic is my horse almost 7 yrs old. The second is my horse with new saddle purchased when he just turned 5. All the rest of the pic's are last week before I rode. I admit most look like the saddle fits pretty good. Am having a bit of trouble posting more than one pic in each post.
