Bands

Just interested to hear how many of you use bands or not. It came up with my trainer today. She told me that I should start using bands with Selena, since for some reason I lose my stirrups with her consistently. (Not with anyone else though which confuses me, who knows? it's not a balance issue. I have never become unbalanced on her)

What do you guys think?

I have to use bands on my main guy because no matter what I always end up losing my stirrups. I use two and put them together and lope one end over my toe and the other over the spur or heel of the boot if you don't wear spurs.

I say try them and see if you like the feel of wearing bands...I know some people who won't wear bands because they feel "trapped". I use ones from the rug company that drops off her stores rugs, as they are stretched and break if something happens. You could also get those BIG bands then tie it in the middle and do what I do with the toe and spur/heel.

It is just a personal preference.....and works for me.

No, just no..I refuse to wear them. I've seen more people drug under a horse because they were hung by the bands that I'd like to share..You're not guaranteed they will break. I also see them as a crutch, you get used to them and eventually lean on them to keep your feet in the stirrups 100% of the time.

I lose my stirrups a good bit of the time, but I have a good enough seat and body position to still ride and perform without them. It's all about how you ride..I'm not saying I'm perfect, I'm surely not..But I won't use anything I see as an "aid"..

I don't ever lose my balance when I lose my stirrups....However it is sometimes enough to make me go "whatjusthappened" and lose my focus for a split second. So that's mainly why I ask.

I used to, but now I just duct tape every inch of my body to the saddle.

I think it's pretty safe.

I LOVE my bands! I have never used them before as I have really good balance, but for some reason with my new gelding, I ALWAYS lose them... :? Now that I use bands, I don't have to worry about my stirrups, and I can really think about riding and doing my job :D :D

Could someone show me what that would look like? I can find a picture on google...

I would say that you can only wear rubber bands when you are making a competition run for money. And no other time.

I say that because that's what I do. I do not think that rubber bands should ever be used to artificially keep your foot in the stirrup, when you aren't capable of doing so yourself, whether or not you lose your balance along with it. I rarely lose a stirrup. However, I don't want that rare occassion to happen and then it takes me a thousandth of a second to get my stirrup back, because that split second of time lost may cost me a paycheck during a compeition barrel run.

I don't have a good competition picture where you can see it. Either there's shadow, or my jeans came over the top, or whatever.

I do not wear spurs. I only use the really large, thin rubber bands (for competition money runs only) so that they will break if I fall off. I know they break, because they will often break just trying to put them on and stretching them over my boot. Since I do not wear spurs, I put the rubber bands around the front of my stirrup, and behind the back of my boot. With spurs, you could hook it around the spur, and then up and over your toe (not actually around the stirrup).

In this photo, I just have the rubber bands around my stirrups. They are not around my feet because I wasn't running!

I found this picture with a Google search: http://www.sportimg.org/wp-content/u...-racing-12.jpg
On her left foot, you can see the rubber band going over the toe of her boot. Which means it is carried under the boot and stirrup, to be looped on the spur behind it.

In this photo, she also has on rubber bands.

All of them are over the toe, and around the stirrup (or so it looks like it must be). Which again, is different than how I do it because I don't wear spurs so I have nothing to hook it behind.

I always ride with bumper spurs, but I rarely use them. When I band my feet in, I put the band over my toe, under the stirrup, and then hook it over my bumper spur. My friend does the same, only she hooks it over the ledge of her boot because she doesn't wear any type of spur.
