well had my first 2 situations since ive started riding. Yesterday went on a 5 hour trail ride and everything was great until he decided to roll over in a wash and i had to bail off. Then today in the Arena we were galloping and my saddle slid under him and he felt it going so he started freaking out so i came off and landed hard on my right side and tore up my arm and hurt my hip and flank pretty bad. I had issues with the pad slipping on a trail ride the other day and ordered another but figured it give this one one more try, bad call lol. Could have been worse though, yesterday i finally bought some good boots since i had been using hiking shoes and since they were wide and had aggressive tread they would never come out of the stirrups so most likely if i hadnt bought those boots yesterday and was wearing my shoes i would have been cought under him. Also since the saddle slid under him he freaked out and ran flat out around the arena for a while so that would have been a much worse situation. I do have to say though im glad the first fall is out of the way lol never a fun thing though. Just thought id share with you guys since im stuck on the couch today since i cant really walk.
Ouch! Sorry to hear that. Was your cinch tight enough? I tighten, then do some more grooming, move the horse around & check again before mounting There's almost always a Lot of slack. glad you got the boots & didn't have the hiking shoes on-that could have been worse. Hope the healing is quick & don't be in a big hurry to go fast.
Why is the pad a problem?
BTW - you now know why I like horses with withers...makes it hard to find a saddle that fits, but once you do, the saddle doesn't roll.
What kind of saddle pad did you order?
Its the saddle pad im pretty sure because no matter how tight i put the girth the pad always slides around under the saddle and that usually make my saddle more around also. Also there is someone else where we board that has the same issues with the same saddle pad on a similar saddle. I have this one right now Easyrider Saddle Pad with Bags
and i ordered this one hoping it will be better Aussie S'cooling Pad - 1/2" does anyone have any recommendations for a good saddle pad for an Aussie stock saddle.
For mine, I get my best results using a cheap Navajo blanket folded in half...one of the ones that is NOT pure wool. The cheap ones don't absorb sweat as well, but the sweat marks are even and the hair stays smooth.
I tried fleece once and felt like it shifted around too much. Pure wool blankets work OK, but the hair was too ruffled when I removed the saddle. I also use the wool felt cinches from DownUnder (the $54/ GIRT 340).
I've gone back to using English leathers and stirrups since this picture was taken. This Appy has withers roughly the size of the Rincons, so I don't have to worry much about the saddle falling to one side. My mare has smaller withers, but her's are still larger than average. Only our little mustang pony is missing withers, and you can't fall very far off of him!
The saddle pad you don't like is the one I've been using for years-in fact, I'm on my 3rd one now..have used it on a number of horse of various breeds., but they all had withers. hope that felt one works better for you.
thanks for the suggestions guys, ill probably give the navajo blankets a try. Yea Willy doesnt have much for withers so it had no problem spinning once the pad started going i think.
ok, what kind of horse did this come off of? and I wonder about the saddle fit. It shouldn't move around that much if it fits well and is cinched up correctly. Mayb you need a western saddle and use a flank cinch, too.
