I'm seeing a bunch of people looking for them on FB and I have no idea what they are or purpose of them is! Help?
I made one for my horse; nothing fancy. I felt that his breastcollar was riding too low and coming across his shoulders and possibly getting in his way. The wither strap raises it up just a little.
And here is the fit without the wither strap.
It just keeps the breast collar in a better position and fit for your horse. If the breast collar doesn't fit right and hangs down it can limit your horse's extension and reach when running. The wither strap corrects that and lifts the breast collar into position...A bunch of people want them to be fancy and match their tack, but unless you just want to spend the money, you can do the exact sae thing with a leather dog collar..
Hm. I don't have that problem... Roper breastcollars normally fit most horses pretty good.
I made one out of a throat latch from an old nylon headstall works for me :) looks a lot like the one beau has pictured.
Also, the fit of your breast collar can have a lot to do with where the loops are on your saddle...if they are lower down then you breast collar is going to sit lower on your horse...if they are higher up then your breast collar is going to sit up higher....if that makes any since....that is why I really like the option saddles like this offer so you can have the best fit for different horses.
Edit: I could not find a picture of the saddle that has the two different loops (one up high one down low) but I did not look really hard...I could have sworn it was a Charmayne James saddle but I could be wrong.
My breast collar rings are low on the saddle, thus my breast collar hangs low.
I'm thinking about ordering a custom saddle this summer for my one splurge starting my new job  and I am definately going to get the rings put on higher!
I have some pictures with and without my wither strap! :-) the first two pictures are obviously without, and the third and fourth are with. :D Before I got my wither strap my breast collar would rub my horse's chest and was constantly falling off of his shoulders... kind of like a spaghetti strap tank top with super loose straps. Now that I have it, my breast collar is always in the correct position. :-) it makes me happy  lol
I think your issue is just the fact that your horse is on the narrow side...but also looks like your wearing your breast collar a bit loose.
My horse is REALLY narrow! that's as far up as I could put holes in the leather too! My saddle is forward a little too much, too, so that doesn't help his case.
