Question: Mares and Foals
Hey y'all! First time poster here!
I have a dominate mare with a 4 week old filly and I have another, more submissive mare with a 2 week old filly. Can I safely put them in a small pasture together?

How small is small?
I'd absolutely put them together. Make sure there aren't any corners that the fillies could get stuck in but overall, now while they are young, they need to be in an environment where they can learn social skills from their dams as well as other horses. After a day or two the mares will ignore each other but the fillies will become partners in crime.

We usually keep s mere w/foal separate for about 3 weeks to let life settle down, so you should be OK.

At my old barn, when they put mares together they put a horizontal board across one of the shelters, so if the mares got in a hussy the foals had some where to escape too, but the mares couldnt fit. We do that with our calfs too.

Thanks Y'all!!! I truly appreciate the advice!!! I turned em' out together and it got pretty hairy there for a while. Mama #2 just ran off and left her baby! Baby #2 discovered mama #1 tried nursing and mama #1 was ok with that. Even ran mama #2 off when she finally came looking for baby. Eventually baby #1 got tired of sharing her mama and ran baby #2 off. Then baby #2 and her mama were reunited. Ahhhh I love a happy ending!!! :clap:Everything should be fine now!!!
