Anyone have any idea what this is? This is the mule that I have been having neurological issues with. She has one spot on the side of her shoulder that was bald and itchy- about the size of a silver dollar. So I started clipping around it.... then finding more spots... and clipping more. None of these were visible, shes like a wooly mammoth. It was driving her nuts itching it. I only clipped this much, but then gave her a bath with an aloe shampoo and I can see more patches of this down her front legs and behinds her shoulders once I got her wet. I put some cortizone cream on it and she seemed pretty comfortable when I got done with her.
I wanted to add, the patches are all smooth so I didn't even feel any of this in her fur when grooming her. No crustiness or anything like that.
Here is a link to a website that might help you. It sounds like it might be a fungus, but read though this article and see if it sounds about right.
The Horse | Patchy Hair Loss
My horse has had patchy hair loss for years. It's not ringworm or any fungus and it's gotten much better as she's gotten older. She used to get these big patches on her chest, neck, and shoulders. Now she more or less only gets them around her eyes so she looks like a raccoon. You can kind of see it in the photo below.
