Needing Advice Just got two horses that havent been cared for
Well Ive just aquiered two horses that havent been cared for at all. My brother inlaw just didnt know what he was getting into. So now im taking over caring for them untill they can find them a new home or a rescue that will take them.
I would like to know what I can do to help them become more friendly towards people they have been in a forest type area for almost two years with little grazing ( we just put up a new fence so they can graze) They were thin and sickly looking but are looking much better now. How do I gain their trust? They havent had much contact with people for the past two years. They have no shelter besides the forest and the mare has lice or something making her itch up on the trees and is getting bald spots on her face from it :-x Im going to try to build some sort of shelter for them so that they can be put away.
Im a horse lover and cant watch it anymore, since animal controll wont take them im stepping in and going to do my best. Being away from horses for years I need as much advice as I can possably get!
kayla marie 96 has the right idea let them come to you if you try to force it they will or may hurt you , also when you feed them grain put it near the barn that will make it easier for them to get use to coming to see the area you have a long job ahead of you what about shoeing and vetting shots etc God be with you and the horses
Yes, just relax in the pen with them :) eventually they will get curious and come visit you, but it may take some time. Sit with them every day! This way they will get used to you and you will not be a threat. If they don't start coming to you, try to sit a bit closer to them every day. By a bit closer I mean about 6 inches to a few feet depending on the enclosure size, you be the judge.
Try to make them healthy for now. I suggest slowly starting to grain them a tad with a few supplements to make sure they are getting their nutrients. Also try to put in some feed through dewormer so they get that right away this spring. Plus then you do not have to worry about how they will react when you shove a scary white tube in their mouths and squirt some nasty tasting paste down their mouth :)
